There is always a market for nostalgia, all those albums you used to see listed and reviewed in NME or Sounds that you couldn’t afford back in the day. They are back in abundance, mostly via Cherry Red who put out countless box sets of music from the 60s 70s and 80s. There’s a lot of that in here. There’s also new things, they are rather “extreme” and they kick off the show. If you want the quieter stuff you will have to be patient as it comes later on. In addition there is jazz, punk, and my usual obsessions.

SHOW NOTES
Giant Spider
A band that unites three veterans of the NYC and Long Island extreme music underground scene, infusing influences from across the heavy underground spectrum. Bassist/vocalist Richard Muller (Vise Massacre, The Last Crime, The Third Kind) conveys an atmosphere of gloom through his roars and low-end salvo, drummer James Baldassano (Show No Mercy, Hostile Intent) delivers a thundering rhythmic attack loaded with earworm fills and rapid hooks, and guitarist Tom Meehan (Morbid Curiosity, Summary Execution) concocts energetic guitar riffs . Hook-laden dissonant riffage and dreary harmonies bleed into a mix of metal, punk, and hardcore while immersing the listener in tales of sci-fi and horror fantasy.
Locusts And Honey
Rising from the boggy marshes of the United Kingdom comes dark ambient funeral doom outfit with their debut LP, Teach Me To Live That I Dread The Grave As Little As My Bed, which was released on May 24th on their new label home of Toronto, Ontario-based Hypaethral Records. The album is a meditation on death and living well, inspired by the bog bodies of Ireland and Denmark – people of the Iron Age who were sacrificially hanged and found extremely well-preserved in peat. Crafted with meticulous care, this opus comprises one sprawling twenty-eight-minute odyssey broken up into six movements. Rooted in early '90s doom , infused with black metal , and cinematic soundscapes the band conjures a sonic maelstrom that traverses the realms of darkness and despair. Vocalist Stephen Murray's anguished growls are intertwined with the melancholic melodies of multi-instrumentalist Tomás Robertson to cast a spell of sorrow and fury upon all who dare to listen.
Carnwennan
An Albany, New York-based sludge/doom metal quartet arrives with their debut LP, Lotus, released through Darkest Records, the label formed by members of fellow Hudson Valley sludge stalwarts Hush. Lotus plays as one continuous track subdivided into four movements, an album created with great restraint and tension, resulting in a slow-motion, seamless evolution. The wooded surroundings of the band’s upstate surroundings indisputably influence the lush, organic sounds of growth and decay, life and demise, themes which are exemplified in the lyrical and visual delivery of the album. Vocalist/guitarist, Jack Jackal, also does design work for many underground artists and curates Castle Jackal Magazine, and contributed artwork to the album layout. Amps and pedals used on the album were conceived and built by lead guitarist Alexandria Ashpond. Since recording the album, the band’s original drummer James Leshkevich has left and been replaced by former drummer of The Acacia Strain, Kevin Boutot.
Buffalo Monroe
A jazz-fusion band from Boston that formed in 2020. The founding members of the band are multi-instrumentalists Rachel and Matt Courtney, also known as Bella and Bo Monroe. Building off of their demos, the duo started professionally recording their music in 2022 with Gregg Bissonette and Willie Waldman. While recording with Waldman, they also recorded an improvised set with friends in the region, Ross Rice and Vinnie Amico, and Matt on the bass. In 2023, Buffalo Monroe recorded with Maestro Ron Carter. All of these songs are featured on the debut album. Buffalo Monroe Meets Willie Waldman features a star-studded cast of performers, producers, and engineers.
Edgar Broughton Band
The Edgar Broughton Band burst on to the UK music scene in 1969 and were trail blazers for the underground counterculture, performing rock music with a social conscience. Hailing from Warwick and featuring Edgar Broughton (guitars, vocals), Steve Broughton (drums, vocals) and Arthur Grant (bass, vocals), their hard-hitting approach over a series of hit albums for EMI’s Harvest label and appearances at the legendary Hyde Park Free Concerts earned them many loyal fans and several hit singles (including their anthem ‘Out Demons Out!’) and the reputation of being a true “people’s band”. In 1970 the band was expanded to include guitarist Victor Unitt. The band’s relationship with the BBC began in January when they recorded their first session for John Peel’s Top Gear show. Peel was an early champion of the band, and this session appeared some months before their debut album ‘WASA WASA!’ Over the next four years The Edgar Broughton Band recorded a number of sessions for Top Gear and Sounds Of The 70s along with two memorable In Concert appearances. This new official 4CD set gathers together these recordings, all newly remastered from the BBC masters and features 32 previously unreleased tracks.
The Residents
Formed in the early 1970s, The Residents have now been charting a unique path through the musical landscape for over 50 years. From far-out, experimental recordings to highly conceptual, innovative multi-platform projects, the band refuses to stand still, and continues to move in several different directions at once. Produced with The Cryptic Corporation, using archival material supplied by the group and their friend and collaborator Carla Fabrizio, this package takes a deep dive into the classic 2002 album – The Residents’ response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, exploring loss, denial and grief as only they could. Remastered, expanded and packed with previously unheard music, including a disc of early instrumentals and vocal demos, ‘Demons Dance Alone’ pREServed sheds new light on the development of one of the band’s modern masterpieces.
Lindisfarne
After breaking up in 1973, the original line-up of Lindisfarne got back together in 1976 for a gig at their beloved hometown stomping ground Newcastle City Hall. The gig was so well- received that they decided to do it again the following year and officially reformed not long after and signed to Mercury Records, releasing three albums and various singles before parting ways with the label in 1980. CD 1 contains the band's first album for Mercury 'Magic In The Air (Live)', a live recording of their triumphant gig at Newcastle City Hall on Christmas Eve 1977. CD 2 features 'Back And Fourth', their first studio album for Mercury that included the single 'Run For Home' which reached the UK Top Ten and was also the band's first hit in America. Amongst the bonus tracks are 'Run For Home' (Edited version), 'See How They Run', 'Juke Box Gypsy' (Single version) and 'Warm Feeling' (Mono version), all previously unreleased on CD. CD 3 contains the band's last album for Mercury, 'The News', as well as bonus tracks 'Easy And Free' (Single version), and ten songs from their Christmas 1979 gig at Newcastle City Hall, all of which are previously unreleased on CD.
The Observers/Johnny Clarke
Renowned for his innovative approach to music-making, Winston ‘Niney’ Holness was among the first of Jamaica’s record producers to experiment with the sound of dub, frequently enlisting the services of the sub-genre’s acknowledged master, King Tubby. It is unsurprising therefore that his dub mixes from the latter 1970s rate among the finest examples of style, especially given the quality of the recordings that provided their source. This collection gathers together 40 such mixes that first saw issue on 7” singles during what is now widely recognised as the golden age of the dub, with almost ¾ of the tracks being featured on CD for the first time. Masterfully remastered for the format, fans can at last acquire, enjoy and experience these essential dub mixes without spending years and a small fortune trying to obtain copies of the original Observer 7” singles.
Blokeacola and Jess Ribeiro
Continuing to feature tracks from these two latest albums
Slyboots
New York melodic rock band Slyboots formed the way many of the best bands do these days: hard work and a little luck. KG* Noble (guitar/vocals) and Margaret LaBombard (bass) had been playing together in bands for years. When they found themselves in need of a new vocalist they turned to their trusty network of local musicians including the legendary Sal Maida, of Roxy Music and Sparks. As luck would have it, Tiffany Lyons (lead vocals) had just played an Irish Festival in her hometown of Rockaway Beach, NY with Sal on bass. He was so impressed with her singing that he immediately recommended that she get in touch with his friends.
SnarskiCircusLindyBand
Another track from the excellent new EP - the first appearance from Lindy Morrison on the show!
The Anti-Queens
The Anti-Queens, Toronto's premiere punk rock 'n' rollers, have just released their latest LP, "Disenchanted," with an accompanying video for the track "Overthinking". The new album appears worldwide on digital and vinyl formats via Stomp Records. For over a decade, The Anti-Queens have been a prominent force in Toronto's music scene. The band is led by the fiercely talented and dynamic duo of Emily Bones and Valerie Knox, who bring a punk-rock energy that challenges the male-dominated music industry. Known for their electrifying live performances, they've gained a reputation for their unstoppable energy and powerful stage presence. Their latest album , continues their tradition of crafting infectious, hook-laden anthems. Written by Emily Bones and Valerie Knox over the course of the pandemic, this album is a conscious meeting of vulnerability, self reflection, and finding one’s self worth and motivation to attack what life throws at you head-on
Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers
This new expanded 50th Anniversary edition of this classic album has been newly remastered from the master tapes and also includes seven bonus tracks comprising ‘The Crack’, a rare single B-side, a previously unreleased mix of ‘Call Ya’ and a complete BBC Radio 1 John Peel session from June 1974. This new expanded remastered release also features an illustrated booklet with a new essay. I saw them supporting Thin Lizzy and Salford University Maxwell Hall on 15th November 1974. I can’t remember much about it other than Chapman was very drunk.
The Dave Graney Show
Now i’ve finished playing the recent new album I return to the back catalogue and this 1998 album which was the first release following the demise of the Coral Snakes. Dave describes it as “one of our best”. It’s certainly a step change material wise.
Meat Puppets
The second album by the Phoenix, Arizona, band released in 1984. It is a departure from their self-titled debut album, which consisted largely of noisy hardcore with unintelligible vocals. It covers many genres from country-style rock to slow acoustic songs to psychedelic guitar effects
2 Lost Souls
Another in the seven mini album series from Ian Moss and Paul Rosenfeld
The Go-Betweens
2020 release from Beggars Arkive capturing this seminal band at their very best live - Lindy’s second showing!
The Triffids
More Australians - 1986 and their self described “best album” - not sure myself I think it’s hard to pick a best from their excellent catalogue
The Fall - Slates - Slags, Slates etc Live In A Hole
Another one from the recently curated ex Band Members release
Four Candles
Ian Moss again this time with his last live full band. If you never saw them live then you missed out. Their last but one gig at their spiritual home The Peer Hat in Manchester. One of their best tunes. Should have been huge but they never broke the glass ceiling of the Manc music scene.
Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds
“It's a new lineup,” e Kid Congo Powers exclaims of the Pink Monkey Birds edition responsible for the fifth studio full-length of their 19 year recording career, it’s called That Delicious Vice. “We've gone from a four piece to a three piece,” continues Kid, whose unique guitar style has been at the centre of some of the most forward-thinking bands in punk and garage: The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Knoxville Girls, to name a handful. The album’s major hallmark has to be its extended collaboration with Alice Bag, the face of and voice of early LA punk titans The Bags.
