SHOW NOTES
Neural Dance - Neil (The Ascension) and Mark (Four Candles, Black Limousine) return with their latest single a hard hitting slice of insistent rock noise. Macclesfield and Middlesbrough combine to create a great sound. Material from the duos previous bands are available at Half Edge Records (see links above).
L.A. Drugz - A reissue of their EP "Outside Place" on June 12 via Hovercraft Records from Portland, Oregon. Originally released in 2013, the EP gained recognition as a power pop classic, earning the band a devoted fanbase. The group, featuring Justin Maurer from Clorox Girls and Suspect Parts, James Carman of Maniac, Telephone Lovers, The Relectors and Images, Cezar Mora from Bad Machine, and Johnny "JD" Reyes, also of Images and Bad Machine. forms a punk/power pop supergroup with a unique musical identity. Inspired by the dissolution of Clorox Girls in 2010, Maurer, along with Cezar Mora, and James Carman, embarked on crafting original songs under new moniker LA Drugz. The EP's sound seamlessly blends classic power pop with melodic '70s punk.
LIINES - the latest single from Manchester’s excellent punksters. A band with a great reputation who deserve much wider recognition.
SnarskiCircusLindyBand - and so i’ve come to the end of my feature of this excellent recent release from Rob and Co.
Dave Graney Show - of this track Dave says “There was once a book I read called "no pockets in a shroud" and also a rockabilly tune called "coffins have no pockets". This tune is a bit of an R&B rumination on the dynamic of walking on to a stage to sing. It's about what you wear in that situation and how you can't drag a lot of shit like car keys and mobile phones with you. In a way you are passing through to another dimension and its mad to try to hang on to anything from back where you were.”
Danny Short - Danny is a brilliant singer songwriter and drummer from Bolton who has been sending me his music for well over ten years. This latest collection appears to a collection of older tunes. His joyful approach to pop music is life affirming and cheers me up no end.
Kevin Miller - Brooklyn's experimental guitarist Miller’s second release for Ramble Records , ‘Ghost Tones' - an expressive and diverse foray into exploratory guitar where Kevin has taken cues from Thelonious Monk, Stockhausen, and several jazz standards incorporating field recordings into his own inimitable style plugging his telecaster directly into a virtual amp.
Clone - One of Brooklyn's most exciting new post-punk bands from their debut 'CL. 1' album (came out June 21 via Little Cloud Records and 5BC Records).
Pas Musique - NYC experimental electronic artist previewing his new album 'Come Follow Me', out July 16 via Alrealon Musique. Influenced by such artists as Faust, Coil, Zoviet France and NEU, Pas Musique was launched 29 years ago by Robert L. Pepper. This album pays tribute to Fad Gadget, with 80's synthpop-tinged compositions with a touch of modern noise and lyrics that are inspired by metaphysical and philosophical themes, interlaced with abstract vocalizations.
Perry Blake - Ahead of releasing his new album 'Death of a Society Girl', Irish singer-songwriter Perry Blake with the light-filled cinematic single 'Concertina'. Released on June 21 via Moochin' About Records, this album marks 26 years for Blake as a recording artist. It's also his first music in five years, following the critically acclaimed ‘Songs of Praise’ ).
We Are Winter’s Blue And Radiant Children - the new quartet of Mat Ball (BIG|BRAVE), Efrim Manuel Menuck (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion), and Jonathan Downs and Patch One (both Ada). A preview track from the album which is described as six modal lullabies drenched in seared distortion, slathered across striding electronic pulses. Ball and Menuck began creating music in and for the bleakest moments of Montréal winters: “We’re honouring that idea of winter, when you come inside and your house is warm, a place that only exists because of how cold it is outside,” says Menuck. They later recruited Downs and Patch to flesh out their initial ideas. Menuck met them in 2015 when recording Ada’s final self-titled album at Montréal’s Hotel2Tango, the same studio where they combined to make this record. To add context to the new release there is a track from that Ada album, another from the most recent BIG|BRAVE release and a classic track from Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Jay Sanders - This debut record from a 30+ year sideman and music industry veteran showcases the quintessence of a prolific composer's catalogue. A natural storyteller, each of Jay Sanders’ tunes weaves a unique tale while the record itself stages a complete transformative journey from beginning to end. During the creation of this record, a tremendous amount of personal loss inspired Jay to cultivate a deep sense of gratitude for his influences and collaborators. The sound of Blues Dream era Bill Frisell is undeniable as the musical conversation between great friends resolves into a sense of peace and acceptance. Evanescent is brought to life through the help of Jay’s long-time collaborators Justin Ray, Jacob Rodriguez, Casey Driessen, Steve Alford, Zack Page, Evan Marin, and Tyler Housholder.
The Hempholics - showcasing the first two in a series of mesmerising track releases across the course of this Summer and beyond, ahead of the eclectic South East London-based collective’s upcoming album "KCT 3". On the (digital) flip, the band pay homage to Toots and The Maytals' B-side classic "Night & Day" from 1969 – a mesmerising rendition of the iconic track which revives the essence of this cherished masterpiece for contemporary audiences, featuring Horseman and King Zepha. I thought i’d play the Dub version.
The Bordellos - The, as usual, sparse information from Metal Postcard says “The perfect release as the sun goes down on the summer solstice. In the tradition of the best english psych music from Tintern Abbey, to Syd, to Julian to the JAMC when they were art and not a rock band. The Bordellos have pulled yet another white rabbit out of the hat.” Just listen, that’s enough.
Blake Jones & The Trike Shop - from the folks at Big Stir records - the next single from the Fresno, Calfornia band. A short, sweet, whimsical and witty number and the follow-up to last month's indie hit “Record Cover Girl”, it's the second preview of the band's forthcoming album set for release this summer.
The 501 East - The debut album by this North American session supergroup. The members of the quartet—who have backed up everyone from Corey Hart to Anne Murray to Kevin Breit—had been friends and colleagues for over 40 years before deciding to form a unit of their own seven years ago. They jelled so perfectly that making an album together seemed the natural way to go. And with a mutual decision to record it live “off the floor,” a quick and easy process seemed inevitable when they started work in earnest in 2019. Flash forward to now, and the album is finally seeing release. Taking their name from a streetcar line in the band’s native Toronto, The 501 East represents a once-in-a-lifetime assembly of talent. Carlos Lopes (guitars, keyboards, background vocals) has played with artists like Shirley Eikhard, Cécille Frenette and Sunny Paxton, and jazz icons Maury Kaye, Phil Nimmons, Claude Ranger and Terry Clark. He’s led his own bands with Earl Seymour and Kevin Breit, playing prestigious gigs that have included The Montréal Jazz Festival, Québec Festival D’Eté and Festi-Jazz de Rimouski. He’s also a composer and producer who has generated hundreds of projects (both domestic and international) for film, television, and record.
Kilbey Kennedy - The third and culminating chapter of the highly acclaimed trilogy by Steve Kilbey and Martin Kennedy. Building on the success of Jupiter 13 (2021) and The Strange Life of Persephone Nimbus (2022), their latest Premonition K is a testament to their musical synergy, encapsulates a darkly beautiful soundscape, drawing inspiration from diverse sources, ranging from Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut to the depths explored by early 1970s Black Sabbath. Steve Kilbey, best known as frontman of legendary Aussie post-prog rockers The Church, infuses each track with an emotional resonance and sense of mystery. Martin Kennedy co-pilots with Kilbey, weaving an intricate musical bed for Kilbey's lyrical dreamings. Drawing from his twenty years of soundscaping with All India Radio, Kennedy adds layers of sonic complexity, creating an immersive experience for the listener.
Hyperfield featuring Samira Prentice - the brainchild of UK songwriter, musician, and producer Stanley MX, with their third single. This electro-pop track, featuring Edinburgh-based vocalist Samira Prentice, follows the success of their last 2 tracks "Therapy" in March and “Frenemy” in May. "Society Sucks" dives deep into the frustrations and disillusionments of modern society, delivering a powerful anthem for those feeling disenchanted by the status quo. Hyperfield represents Stanley MX’s innovative approach to music, with every track featuring collaborations with artists, including singers, rappers, and poets; each exploring themes of human behaviour and angst, set against a vibrant electronic musical backdrop.
