This episode is packed with Australian Music - what’s different you ask? - well more than usual, put it that way. Variety being the spice of life the show crosses many genres and sub-genres. At the core melody and being different to the mainstream is the thing that drives the selections.

SHOW NOTES
Legless Crabs
They continue to release singles at an unprecedented rate. This one is a little darker than usual and somewhat menacing. From the equally busy Metal Postcard Records who deserve a lot of attention.
The Anti-Queens
For over a decade, The Anti-Queens have been a prominent force in Toronto's music scene. The band is led by the duo of Emily Bones and Valerie Knox, who bring a punk-rock energy that challenges a male-dominated music industry. Known for their electrifying live performances, they've gained a reputation for their unstoppable energy and powerful stage presence. Their latest album Disenchanted, Recorded at Drive Studios in Toronto by Steve Rizun and Dave Baksh, continues their tradition of crafting infectious, hook-laden anthems. Written over the course of the pandemic, this album is a conscious meeting of vulnerability, self reflection, and finding one’s self worth and motivation to attack what life throws at you head-on. As the band says: “Nothing is held back and everything is on the table. Disenchanted, light and dark, bright and dreary. Magical and kinda sad”.
Mykal Rose x Subatomic Sound System x Hollie Cook
Reggae superstar Mykal Rose, original voice of the Grammy Award-winning Jamaican group Black Uhuru, steps into the future with Lee "Scratch" Perry's former band, NYC dub specialists Subatomic Sound System and London lover's rock queen Hollie Cook on this new single "Put Down The Gun" which serves as the second single from the trio's upcoming collaborative full-length album, Rockin’ Like a Champion slated for release July 26 via joint venture between Dubshot Records and Controlled Substance Sound Labs.
The Nausea
Released on June 7th. A co-release by Absurd Exposition and Buried In Slag And Debris, Requiem is a culmination of years of exploration and creativity by Anju Singh, the driving force behind The Nausea. It's a deeply personal journey filled with tense, evocative tones and melodic, string-centric compositions. The album's centrifugal force is the strange, otherworldly quality of Singh's violin playing, which moves between a multitude of performance techniques.
Rain Parade
Recent EP release by the band known for their significant contributions to the Paisley Underground scene in the 1980s. This release coincides with the band's return to the music scene after a long hiatus, highlighted by their latest album "Last Rays of a Dying Sun," which marks their first new album in nearly four decades. The EP and album showcase new music by original band members Matt Piucci and Steven Roback, continuing the band's tradition of neo-psychedelic rock with fresh material.
No Wayne
An EP of four songs recorded in Chips Kiesbye’s Planet of Noise studio and mastered by Henryk Lipp (Music-a-Matic). The EP draws inspiration from the 1960s and 1970s without resorting to nostalgia. No Wayne is a family affair - the band's founding members Kai (guitar) and Ilpo (drums) are brothers. It wasn't until the passing of a parent a few years ago that they discovered each other's existence and got in touch. A significant common denominator was their shared passion for music, and upon realizing they both played instruments, they decided to form a band together. Soon, they brought in Göran, Kai's oldest friend, on bass, and Kai's ex-wife Camilla on vocals. The result is a band that is as musically tight as it is personally cohesive.
Small Black Arrows
The brainchild of Luke Bailey & Jimmy Hanley, the lockdown & their multiple discipline backgrounds in the arts were the catalyst for their formation. Small Black Arrows combine eclectic influences from folk to trip-hop & from RnB to rock and opera, to create their own unique brand of mesmerising, atmospheric music, using alternative instrumentation to question traditional arrangements, an approach also reflected lyrically.Their sound is forged through passionate DIY dedication to their craft; a product of their urban, working class, roots.
Grant McLennan
This show is Aussie-centric so what better way to kick off than with Grants’ third of four solo albums from December 1994. It was recorded in Athens, Georgia with American session musicians and was produced by John Keane (R.E.M., Indigo Girls, Vic Chesnutt). If I ever want cheering up I listen to Grant he fills my soul with joy.
Barbican Quartet
First prize winners of the ARD International String Quartet Competition 2022 – features violinist Amarins Wierdsma, violinist Kate Maloney, violist Christoph Slenczka and cellist Yoanna Prodanova. Released on June 7 via GENUIN Classics this is the group's extraordinary debut album. The album features Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No.2 “Listydůvěrné” (Intimate Letters), The Ear of Grain by Dobrinka Tabakova and two works by Robert Schumann, String Quartet No. 3, Op. 41 in A major and Wenn ich ein Vöglein wär.
Hungrytown
The first new full-length release from the Vermont indie-folk/chamber-pop duo since 2015's acclaimed "Further West". The early preview singles "Another Year", "Feel Like Falling", and "Tuesday Sun" have won the band new followers on indie radio worldwide, and the album brings them together with nine more gems of lush Americana to create a song cycle that's a world all its own. It's out June 21 on CD and all digital platforms.
2 Lost Souls
Ian and Paul with the final two seven track mini-albums in the Seven Virtues series.
SnarskiCircusLindyBand
The second Australian contribution on the show. Rob Snarski is a singer, a velvet-voiced troubadour who I feature regularly. Rob has toured the globe with The Blackeyed Susans and as a guest vocalist with The Triffids. Currently working with Lindy Morrison who drummed with The Go-Betweens ‘Evil’ Graham Lee [Triffids] Shane O’Mara and Dan Kelly in this excellent band
The Armoires
Southern California indie pop quintet who celebrate a full decade as a band with a new single, and a brash mission statement of a song: “We Absolutely Mean It”. The follow up to the band's late-2023 indie hit “Music & Animals”, it arrived on all digital platforms April 19, ten years to the week since the founding of the band and serving as a theme song for their current incarnation. “We Absolutely Mean It” is the second single previewing their forthcoming new album,
Blokeacola
If you’ve been paying attention you’ll know I am playing all of the tracks on this excellent release. This one stands out as one of the premier tunes on the album.
Big Youth
The debut album from 1972. Originally released in 1972 on the Gussie and Jaguar labels in Jamaica. Then issued in the United Kingdom in 1973 by Trojan Records.
Harry Howard
Yet another Aussie legend with a track from his most recent album.
Jess Ribeiro
Continuing to make my way through this excellent new album from Jess. And yes she is Australian.
The Silversound
Stand out album of last year - for some reason I hadn’t played this one yet from this excellent Australian “Super Group”.
Dave Graney Show
Regular listeners will know I play something from Dave every week. A track from the post Coral Snakes period first offering (1978). In 2020 Dave said “I love this album. One of our best. Created after I split up the Coral Snakes. Clare and I cooking it up with a keyboard and a computer. The other half we played with our new beat combo of Adele Pickvance on bass and teen jazz prodigy Stuart Perera on guitar. He played a left handed solid body Rickenbacker- and still does. Very lucky to find these players. Much harder to get even one band going , let alone two or three. Its luck and timing and ambition. Recorded for Festival”.
Federale
In the 20 years of their existence, Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with increasing doses of moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood and late-period Leonard Cohen. Through it all, songwriter and lead singer Collin Hegna – who also spent the last 20 years as a dues-paying member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre – maintains a strictly retro vibe. Federale's records have always sounded period-correct for an alternate-universe 1971, where rock and roll never caught on.
Little Bohemia
New release by Plymouth band. A great punk album that spits some bile and captures the essence of many of the great guitar riffs of the 1970's with an added 21st century twist. The Glitter Band are writ large against this one.
Rain Parade
The title track of the new EP.
Nyctronix
Jed Stephens (previous releases were under the name Jed) returns with a new project - a series of new singles which I will be featuring over the next few weeks.
The Wot Nots
Sussex based - Capt Sensible & Splodgenessabounds meet Oi influenced punks and fight it out live in Hastings. Recorded live at the Carlisle Public House during a thrilling performance in February 2024, this bootleg album captures the unfiltered essence of the band's sound. From start to finish, "The Battle of Hastings" delivers a relentless onslaught of power, theatrics, and yes, even mistakes, that's all part of the charm! Strictly not for audiophiles!
Robert Forster
I play Grant then I have to play Robert. Somewhat annoyed he only played that London on his recent visit. Auster South went with Big Jeff and advises it was marvellous despite RF struggling with a virus. His second album and his first self-produced disc. The band Robert used for the recording were COW (Country or Western) a Bob Moore band that featured Dave McCormack from Custard and future member of the Go-Betweens and Custard, Glenn Thompson. As Forster's backing band, they subsequently toured under the name the Silver Backwash.
