NOTES
Rain Parade
The third studio album released through Flatiron Recordings and Label 51 on August 4, 2023. Their first studio album since their reformation in 2012, and their first in 38 years, following Crashing Dream. I’ll be featuring the new EP “Last Stop On The Underground” in a couple of weeks.
The Beat Freaks
The third studio album on which the musicians invited a special guest - American trumpeter Ralph Alessi. A jazz quartet founded in Szczecin by guitarist Michał Starkiewicz in 2014. The musicians have many individual awards and achievements to their credit; they have collaborated and continue to collaborate with the cream of jazz musicians and beyond. The current lineup of the band includes: Michał Starkiewicz - guitar, Tomasz Licak - tenor saxophone, Flavio Gullotta - double bass, Radek Wośko - drums.
The Loop-aznavour Band
The Adventures of Salvador lead singer steps out on his own with a new band.
Fred Abong
Alternative crooner-philosopher Fred Abong with his new 'Blindness' album, released via Moochin' About Records. Now based in New Orleans, Abong is no stranger to the US music scene, having got his musical start in the 1980’s on the Rhode Island hardcore punk scene. In the early 1990s, he played bass for Throwing Muses and then Belly. Putting music on hold for academic pursuits, he then earned a PhD in Humanities and taught at various universities for eight years before returning to music. Now back as a solo artist, Abong also plays bass in the Kristin Hersh Electric Trio. He has also been a practicing Vedic astrologer for the past 20 plus years.
The Fall
With the name of previous track being “Blindness” I immediately thought of The Fall track of the same name - and the excellent Peel Session version - from the massive Box Set of sessions.
The Legless Crabs
Metal Postcard continue to deliver excellent releases - The Legless Crabs are one of the best bands on their roster - their music is as uniquely challenging as the previous artists. Don’t try and pigeon hole it in a genre, therein lies madness.
The Parasite
As yet unreleased, nothing more to add at this stage, it says here!
Pink B
A Close Connection With Your Soul by Pink B marks the debut release of Wireframe Clouds. Following the eclectic style of the artist, the album spaces between ambient and downtempo electronic music. The tracks alternate between sombre and sometimes joyful moods, creating an atmospheric backdrop reminiscent of an art film.
Dave Graney & Clare Moore
A Barry Adamson remix of the track from the recent (strangely) (emotional) album.
Eric Chenaux Trio
Joined by Phillipe Melanson (Bernice, U.S Girls, Joseph Shabason) on electronic percussion and longtime collaborator Ryan Driver on Wurlitzer organ, Chenaux's new trio expands on the celebrated singer-songwriter's experimental avant-jazz palette, following his widely acclaimed 2022 solo album Say Laura. "These Things" is the 2nd advance single from Delights Of My Life, accompanied by a video from Chenaux's perennial filmmaking accomplice Eric Cazdyn, this time featuring dancer and choreographer Angela Schubot.
Jess Ribeiro
Another track from Jess’s excellent new album - as it says on Bandcamp Jess Ribeiro is a shape-shifting musical enigma. The near-untouchable quality of her recorded output is astonishingly consistent and the wait for new music is always worthwhile. Ribeiro’s songs are cinematic in scope: it’s music that travels, across deserts like a Western, through city streets like Film Noir. Narrative and poet
Moff Skellington
The third in Moff’s recent set of releases. I hesitate to attempt to describe this latest collection, all I will say is the unique world of Eddodi appears to have been infested with a particular spirited approach which would be described as free jazz mixed with prog rock in a parallel universe. A recent peak in Moff interest on Spotify gives me hope that he is making inroads into the zeitgeist although I am still waiting for the critical universe to get it. I marvel at Moff's continued inventiveness which is on full display herein.
Ruth Theodore
Original folk voice' Ruth Theodore signed to Righteous Babe Records USA, is described as 'one of the UK's most exciting artists'. Her highly acclaimed new release is the fruits of another collaboration with Tony and Grammy award winning US bassist/producer Todd Sickafoose and percussionist Mathias Kunzli.
Wayne Horvitz
Recorded live at the Frankfurt Art Rock Festival in 1989 and at The Knitting Factory in 1990, this duo performed a handful of times in NYC, at a few festivals in Europe, and one time in Tokyo. Some tunes are stripped down to piano and guitar, others utilize drum machines, samplers and sequencers to fill out the arrangements. The music still sounds fresh, and serves as a portrait of an era, and just how unique this collaboration was.
Colin Fisher
Suns of the Heart is a follow up to Reflections of the Invisible World and the preceding album V le Pape. Suns of the Heart was created as part of the process of building on the relationship of documenting Fisher's live solo process and augmenting it over the course of 3 records with studio compositional ideas.
With Suns of the Heart, Fisher connected with his good friend David Psutka, who released Reflections of the Invisible World on his label Halocline Trance, to engineer and produce the project. The concept for the album was to deconstruct Fisher's live process and apply a studio sampling methodology from hip hop to establish foundational layers for each track. Psutka was the perfect partner for this endeavor considering his long history of electronic music as well as his appreciation for interesting conceptual ideas. Psutka essentially became a co-composer for a few tracks and was an indispensable force in constructing this unique document. Together they sampled various sounds, textures, incidental sounds from me on various instruments, reconfigured them in Psutka's daw and then built compositions on top of them.
Trinity
Originally released in 1977 in a very short run. This CD reissue captures the 22 year-old Trinity at his very best.
Blokeacola
I will continue to feature this album until I have played all the tracks. It’s that good!
Space Museum
Another unreleased track - not sure when it will be out.
The Fall
Yes, more Fall. The “live” version of the classic Fall 10” Slates release recently compiled by the then band members - the Hanley Brothers, Craig Scanlon, and Marc Riley. Leave The Capitol was always my favourite track of that era, and arguably one of their best ever.
Tony Romano
Guitarist Tony is fluent in so many styles of music that he has been one of the busiest musicians in New York City for more than 20 years. Although his soulful, lyrical guitar playing has made him a favorite accompanist among vocalists, on his newest album as a leader, he displays his edgy, modern jazz style on 13 original compositions.
Andrés Coll, Majid Bekkas, Mateusz Smoczynski, Ramón López
Embark on an inspiring musical journey through freedom, world culture, and avant-garde jazz with the Andrés Coll Odyssey. This four-member band brings together the diverse cultures of Ibiza, Eastern Europe, and North Africa in a modern and inspiring approach that moves listeners with the native grooves of these exotic lands. Not only do they bring cultures back together, but they are also fierce advocates of freedom, playing and expressing themselves into musical ecstasy through intuitive improvisation, while still maintaining the most fundamental groove that moves listeners into a state of liberation and internal unity. This is a live recording captured on June 4th 2023 at Enter Enea Festival, Poznan (Poland).
Absolute Beginners
Cambridge band with the third of their four releases. Pointed in my direction by the estimable Dave Hammond.
Miles Davis
Classic Miles from one of the excellent box sets that Columbia put out a few years back. Groundbreaking at the time.
