A lot of the music on this show is from Brisbane but in equal measure we travel the globe for a cross section of some of the best new Different Noises around. There is everything from indie pop, via post-rock, through improvisation to sludge metal. Variety is, of course, the spice of life.

SHOW NOTES
Spirit In The Room - If you ever wondered what goes on in the head of a film noir hitman, horror novel asylum inmate, or a golden age silver screen villain, it might sound something like this. The vision of Louisiana-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Dennis R. Sanders unfurls through cigarette smoke, cheap booze, and distortion like an anachronistic fever dream soundtracked by a collision of gothic vocal hues, immersive alternative architecture, and jarring metallic catharsis. It’s scary at times. It’s sad at other times.
Conny Ochs - Since 2010, Ochs has been capturing the hearts and minds of curious music fans around the globe through his expressive and emotive songcraft. Through eight full-length releases – including two collaborative albums with Scott “Wino” Weinrich of Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, and more, and not to mention his work in Trialogos and other projects – he has expanded his sound from stripped-down singer/songwriter anthems based almost entirely on guitar and vocals into more rock-infused creations with a more standard rock backline with drums and more. Almost to the date one year after his Wahn Und Sinn LP, sung completely in German, he now unveils his new studio album Troubadour, which marks his return to the English language and the very roots of his music, in a very naked approach to the essence of his craft. An album that feels more akin to his 2010 debut album, Raw Love Songs, yet with a more refined and polished sound and approach, adopted naturally through the years of hard work since the first album.
Fingerless - Brand new music from the prolific and chameleonic Meanjin/Brisbane trio. ‘Monster’, is taken from recent work with Jeff Lovejoy (Screamfeeder, Sahara Beck, Blues Arcadia) for an as-yet-untitled guitar and piano-driven 5th album. This new single, a rich acoustic ballad with beautiful and uplifting harmonies, hides a dark and mysterious tale, as it joins 3 other previously released singles (‘More to Come’, ‘Cry a Little’, ‘Yes Today’) which hint at the kaleidoscopic ambition of this upcoming album. The band’s songwriter Marc Cheeseman reflects on the song’s meaning; “it’s a pretty simple song, but a deeply personal one. We’ve been playing this live for a long time, but I resisted recording it. Basically it’s about self doubt. Maybe that’s why I didn’t want to record it…”
Movieland - The first advance single from the collection of rarities by cult shoegazers Movieland. Featured on 604 Records’ new archival label imprint known as 604 Decades, encapsulating the band’s signature blend of dreamy melodies and raw, introspective lyrics. Their sound, often considered ahead of its time, defined a unique chapter in the underground music scene of the early ‘90s when Nirvana and Sonic Youth were on the cusp of breaking into the mainstream. The full album, Then & Now, will be released on December 13th, 2024. “I Relate” perfectly embodies the essence of Movieland—a testament to the melodic prowess and creative spirit that thrived in Vancouver during a pivotal musical era.
Vaague - The electronic adventure of Brussels based drummer/producer Antoine Pierre culminates in an eleven track long dancefloor epic. It navigates between straight-forward club music, deep bass music, drum-and-bass, ambient synth soundscapes, genetically-modified jazz and jungle grooves, always with one common denominator: ninja drum pattens!
Zagušljivi Dim - a trio hailing from Čakovec, Croatia, drawing inspiration from both the external world and 'our inner selves’. Durchfall der Lebensmaschine (Diarrhea of the Life Machine) blends elements of prog, post-rock, psychedelia, jazz and minimalist music, producing extended, meditative pieces that emphasize texture and atmosphere over conventional song structures.
The Gold Needles - the band's first new original since their 2021 hit indie album What's Tomorrow Ever Done For You? and the first preview of a new full-length record on the way in 2025
Neon Kittens - out in time for Halloween but because I am working several weeks behind due to the sheer amount of stuff that comes in a little late. Their nth release this year. Andy says “A collection of horror themed songs we recorded earlier in the year, before the real horror started. These four songs were recorded during the sessions for Half Man Half Kitten.”
There are tracks from my current featured albums from Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes, Snarski vs Snarski, Steve Wynn, The Stress Of Leisure, and Vee VV
The Yets - South Carolina-based alternative rock duo with their new single , a reverie-laden appetizer previewing their debut album 'Pinup Girl', to be released in the new year. It showcases their evolution as artists, blending modern and classic rock elements to create music that feels both fresh and timeless. Based in Myrtle Beach, The Yets features the creative synergy of guitarist-producer Craig Anderson Snook and vocalist Robin Wilson . Their collaboration fuses Craig’s dynamic guitar work and production expertise with Robin’s rich, emotive vocals, resulting in a sound that is both powerful and distinctive. Further highlighted by their multi-instrumental performance abilities, they have developed a sound which is truly their own.
Statik Sound System - This release is a milestone of Bristols “Trip Hop” era and a blueprint for the sonically timeless movement and soundclash of musically inspiration of all genres in modern pop music…! Statik Sound System whose only track on spotify – Revolutionary Pilot - by now - had over 1 million plays. The track became so famous cause of KRUDER & DORFMEISTER. The picked the tune for the legendary release DJ KICKS who came out on !K7 Records.
Spacehopper - Bryn from The Screaming Love Collective/The Mind Sweepers with classic track from one of his earlier bands the Glasgow based self proclaimed art noise terrorists.
Deadform - Oakland-based sludge metal/crust punk trio featuring former members of Laudanum, Stormcrow, and Dystopia with their debut full-length. A fusion of sludge metal and crust punk that comprises and compliments the previous projects of its three members. The six-track offering follows their 2022 self-titled demo with themes of war, cults, famine, and mortality that evoke a more personal attachment to the subject matter. A convergence of seemingly incompatible genres has become greater than the sum of its parts. Those parts are heavy, chugging, and drenched in distortion while still allowing the music to breathe.
The Jack Rubies - Emerging from the UK’s C86 scene, The Jack Rubies formed in East London with an edgy, melodic, noir-tinged sound sometimes likened to Bowie, Nick Cave and Serge Gainsbourg. In the febrile, oppressive climate of ‘80s Britain, a Thatcher-fatigued young generation responded with a flurry of indie activity -- championing outsider art events, surreal stand-up, poetry rants and a bumper crop of new bands. With Ian Wright on lead vocals and guitar, SD Ineson on backing vocals and guitar, bassist Steve Brockway, percussionist Lawrence Giltnane, and Peter Maxted on drums, the Rubies quickly found themselves playing out regularly at alternative London venues and garnering a rapturous response from the often-jaded British music press. A run of acclaimed indie singles followed, and the band became fixtures on the college circuit and guests of The Blow Monkeys, Katrina & the Waves and The Triffids among others on nationwide tours across the UK. Dispersing to locations as far-flung as North Carolina and New York City, the individual Rubies remained musically engaged as elements of their scene's signature sound regained ever more cultural currency (think Interpol or Franz Ferdinand). Perhaps appropriately, it wasn't until the dark times of the COVID-19 pandemic that all five members felt compelled to begin experimenting with their old chemistry, having scant expectations that the results would be as bracingly “now” as they proved to be. After decades of silence, The Jack Rubies are back.
Sink To The Sea - : an ambient, experimental post-rock trio hailing from Southern California. Featuring Marc Bobro, James Van Arsdale, and Noah Whatoff, their music explores intricate sonic landscapes and profound emotional depths
The wonderful 4000 records with a new compilation album of south east Queensland artists covering other local artists. It’s called House Key 3 and it features 33 local artists paying homage to fellow local artists. All proceeds from the album go to Brisbane community radio 4ZZZ. Featuring 5 tracks from the album by Sarah Stockholm, Bad Sext, Holystone, Midgee, and Devotions
Water Damage - more from this excellent improvising band from Austin, Texas with the second album in as many weeks. Water Damage, while technically a septet, actually operate in various configurations, with the proviso there should always be two drummers and two bass players on hand. They prefer if each of their sonic ideas takes up a whole reel of tape, and once they start they don't look back. Everything proceeds towards an imaginary end point that is only achieved when the tape starts flapping.
