Lots of bands new to me on this one including ones from the Greater Manchester area - it’s always good to support local grass-roots musicians. The usual clutch of great Australian music and towards the end of the show a dip into the archive for some old favourites. Variety is the watch word.

SHOW NOTES
Midland Railway
Brought together by their mutual love of live music, Magic the Gathering tournaments, and LTA local tennis leagues, this band have crafted a distinctive style and sound of their own. Their infectious blend of melodic nerd-rock takes influence from a slew of areas from the buzzing guitar vibes of Weezer, to the lyrical mystery of Bright Eyes, and the guile of Jimmy Eat World. Their songs are inspired by their unique interests and hobbies stemming from such quirky subjects as Pokémon, online football management, and serial killers.
Comprised of Nick (vocals and guitar), Sarah (bass and vocals), Andy (guitar), and Billy (drums), the hail from Manchester, England. Never ones to shy away from extensive live performances, the dynamic four piece have played a barrage of shows throughout the whole of Northern England. Their recent gig at Manchester Academy 2, and their headline
performances on the closing night of the International Pop Overthrow festival at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, underline their growing popularity and increasing fanbase
Bikini Test Failure - It’s been a while but James is back with his signature sound which is full of pop smarts.
The Junta - Monty goes heavy metal with a pulsing attack on the senses
Neverland Ranch Davidians - First single from their new album which is out in February. In the last two years, Davidians Tex Mosley, Will Bentley and Max Hagen have played dozens of incendiary shows across California and beyond, wowing audiences with their potent mix of garage rock, blues, cowpunk, Stax soul, and greasy R&B (played with just two guitars and drums). Having received rave reviews for their debut from critics and fans alike (Iggy Pop being one of the latter), the Davidians aren't ones to rest on their laurels. The album "Shout It On The Mountain" finds them honing their songcraft and expanding their sound, adding more soul and R&B to the mix. While the trio plays live without a bass player, Greg "Smog" Boaz (Mavis Staples, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men, Tex & the Horseheads) played bass on all of the new album's tracks.
Movieland - This Vancouver shoegaze troupe from the ‘90s is having their work beautifully reissued on 604 Records’ new archival series, 604 Decades, which pays tribute to Vancouver’s overlooked artists from decades past. Movieland can be viewed in the same light as Yhe Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and The Sound.
Neon Kittens - Three tracks from their excellent new album
No Frills Essentials - the first releases by a new Manchester/Salford collective. The No Frills Essentials are a group of like minded souls from the North West, the collective features singer/songwriter Doiminic Carlton Jones, vocals by Gail Faragheer, bass Danny Needham, spoken word by poet Ian Leslie and drums by Bryn Thorburn.
Sand Pebbles - this sneaked out earlier in 2024 and I missed it - the second track was not on The Antagonist album.
Screaming Love Collective - Out on Head Space records. Silver Tooth is a funky house groove. Black Hills is a venture in to the world of folk / Country
Further tracks from the recent Snarski vs Snarski and Dave Graney & Clare Moore albums which I am featuring in their entirety.
Willi Carlisle - The sun rises once again on Anti-Corp’s beloved The Magnolia Sessions, returning after a two-year break with a new album by renowned folk singer, Carlisle, out now everywhere, with a vinyl pressing underway to aid victims of Hurricane Helene. Launched in 2020, The Magnolia Sessions showcases bluegrass, dark country, and folk singer/songwriter acts, recorded live in an intimate outdoor setting by a large magnolia tree at the Anti-Corp/Black Matter Mastering headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, by owner Dan Emery. The series has delivered albums from the likes of Lost Dog Street Band, The Hill Country Devil, Joe Wunderle, Cooper McBean, The Resonant Rogues, Matt Heckler, Jason Dea West, Johno Leeroy, Cristina Vane, Nick Hans, Casper Allen, Jeff Loops, Angela Autumn, Tyler Hood, Jade Brodie, Douglas Francisco, Ivan McLeod, and Austin Stambaugh, many of which have debuted on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts and I have featured on previous shows. Following three seasons of monthly releases in the series, The Magnolia Sessions has been hibernating since late-Summer 2020, but now springs back to life with a slightly altered approach, with periodic releases not bound to a monthly or seasonal release schedule.
Ben Zucker - latest solo project brings together several threads in his varied and prolific output into a dynamic flow of vibraphone-powered electroacoustic intensity.
Danny Short - Danny’s final release in a busy year - quality alt.pop
Jess Ribeiro - Remixed by Stella Mozgawa originally from the excellent Summer of Love album
Shabaka - The EP follows his recent critically well-received album, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge It’s Grace, featuring a new track with fellow flautist and hip hop luminary André 3000.
And to conclude some classic tracks from my archive one from Herbie Hancock, three from Ill Ease, one from Boards of Canada, and some soundtrack magic from Dave Douglas & Keystone.
